What This Template Shows

Two dissolved marriages and one current one.

The father was previously married to another woman; they divorced and she has a daughter; the Son's stepsister.

The mother was previously married to another man; they divorced and he has a son; the Son's stepbrother.

The father and mother are currently married and the Son is their biological child.

The full blended picture sits in one diagram: two divorce lines, a current marriage, and step-sibling relationships on both sides.

The conflict between the Son and stepsister and the distance between the Son and his mother's ex-husband add a relational layer to the structural one.

The symbol legend is displayed below the diagram. For full definitions, see Genogram Symbols Explained.

FAQ

What is a blended family genogram template?

A blended family genogram template maps a family structure that includes divorce, remarriage, and step-relationships using standard genogram notation. It shows biological, step, and half-sibling relationships in the same diagram alongside current household arrangements, giving clinicians and caseworkers a clear picture of who belongs to which household and how each child connects to each parent figure.

How do you show step-relationships in a genogram?

Step-relationships are shown structurally; the biological connection runs from the parent to the child through a biological child line, and the step-parent appears in the household connected to that parent by a marriage line. The step-parent does not have a biological child line to the child. The household boundary marker shows who lives together, which clarifies the step-relationship without needing a separate line type.

How do you show a half-sibling in a genogram?

Half-siblings share one biological parent and appear in the diagram connected to that parent by a biological child line. The other parent is a different person from the one shown for the other children. In EasyGenogram, placing both children on the same parent's child line with different second parents makes the half-sibling relationship visible in the structure.

Is this template free?

Yes. Open and customize it in EasyGenogram at no cost. Export requires a subscription for most users; students with a valid school email can export free.

Can I use this for a family therapy or social work assignment?

Yes. The template follows McGoldrick-Gerson-Petry standard notation and includes the divorce, remarriage, and step-relationship lines required for blended family documentation. Open it in EasyGenogram, adjust the household configuration to match your assignment or case, and export as PDF for submission.
