School Counseling Genogram Template
A genogram template mapping a student's household, family structure, and important relationships for school counseling assessment, student support planning, intake assessment, IEP documentation, and CACREP.
What This Template Shows
Two generations with a recently divorced household at the center.
The parents are divorced; the father is now cohabiting with a stepmother.
The student (the primary person) has a close relationship with the mother and a distant one with the father, and is close with the paternal grandmother. The sister shares the same structural position in the family.
The diagram maps what a school counselor would most need to see quickly: who is in the household, how the family changed, and where the student's key relationships sit.
The symbol legend is displayed below the diagram. For full definitions and clinical usage, see Genogram Symbols Explained.

FAQ
What is a school counseling genogram template?
A school counseling genogram template is a family diagram used by school counselors to map a student's household composition, family structure, and key relationships. It gives the school counselor a quick visual record of who is in the student's life, how the family is configured, and what recent transitions may be affecting the student's school experience.
How is a school counseling genogram different from a clinical genogram?
A clinical genogram maps three or more generations with detailed emotional overlays, health markers, and relational patterns for therapeutic or medical use. A school counseling genogram is simpler and more immediate; it focuses on the student's current household, custody arrangements, recent family changes, and the relationships most likely to affect school engagement. Health markers and extended family are included only when directly relevant.
Do school counselors use genograms?
Yes. School counselors use genograms as part of student assessments, particularly for students with academic, behavioral, or social-emotional challenges. The genogram helps the counselor understand the family context behind what the student is presenting at school (household instability, parental transitions, caregiver capacity) without requiring a full clinical assessment.
Is this template free for school counseling students?
Yes. Open and customize it in EasyGenogram at no cost. Students with a valid school email can export free when a professor registers a classroom account; other users export from $9/mo/seat.
Can I use this for a CACREP school counseling assignment?
Yes. The template follows McGoldrick-Gerson-Petry standard notation, which is recognized across CACREP-accredited school counseling programs. Open it in EasyGenogram, adjust the household structure to match your assignment or case, and export as PDF for submission.
