What This Template Shows

Three generations with mental health and behavioral markers across multiple family members. The paternal grandfather is deceased with an alcohol use marker. The paternal grandmother carries a depression marker. The father carries both depression and alcohol use markers. The primary person (the son) carries an anxiety marker.

The intergenerational transmission is visible in the diagram before any annotation is added: alcohol use and depression running from grandfather to father, anxiety appearing in the primary person's generation. The cutoff between son and father, and the conflict between father and his own father, sit on top of that health pattern. This is the kind of diagram a clinical psychologist uses to make multigenerational patterns legible.

The symbol legend is displayed below the diagram. For full definitions and clinical usage, see Genogram Symbols Explained.

When to Use This Template

  • Clinical intake and psychological assessment: map the client's family health history and relational patterns as part of an initial assessment or diagnostic formulation.
  • Intergenerational pattern mapping: track the transmission of mental health conditions, behavioral patterns, and relational dynamics across generations using Bowen family systems or psychodynamic frameworks.
  • Doctoral-level supervision and clinical training: use as a working document in supervision to ground case conceptualization in the client's multigenerational context.
  • Psychology coursework and practicum documentation: meets standard three-generation requirements for clinical and counseling psychology programs at graduate and doctoral level.

FAQ

What is a psychology genogram template?

A psychology genogram template is a three-generation family diagram used in clinical and counseling psychology to map family structure, mental health history, and emotional relationship patterns. It gives the psychologist a visual record of what transmits across generations and serves as both an assessment tool and a basis for treatment planning.

How is a psychology genogram different from a counseling genogram?

A counseling genogram maps the individual client's relational context and key influences while a psychology genogram goes further into diagnostic and pattern-tracking territory; it prioritizes mental health markers, behavioral history, and multigenerational transmission of conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance use. The depth of health annotation is typically greater in a psychological context.

What mental health markers does a psychology genogram include?

EasyGenogram's health marker system uses a four-quadrant layout on each person symbol. Common psychological markers include depression, anxiety, alcohol use, substance use, PTSD, and other diagnoses. Each marker is placed in the relevant quadrant and the assignment is noted in the legend. Multiple markers can sit on one person when the clinical picture requires it.

Is this template free for psychology students?

Yes. Open and customize it in EasyGenogram at no cost. Students with a valid school email can export free when a professor registers a classroom account; other users export from $9/mo/seat.

Can I use this for a doctoral-level clinical psychology assignment?

Yes. The template follows McGoldrick-Gerson-Petry standard notation, which is the format used across clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and MFT training programs at graduate and doctoral level. Open it in EasyGenogram, adjust the structure and health markers to match your assignment or client, and export as PDF for submission or documentation.
