Two-Chair Dialogue / Two-Chair Technique

Two-Chair Dialogue / Two-Chair Technique is a live chair-work tool for practitioners helping clients encounter internal splits, polarities, self-critical conflict, or competing parts of self. It helps capture each side's voice, feeling, need, or demand, observe role shifts, and review possible softening, negotiation, integration, or next steps.

Use this background section to understand when the tool fits, how practitioners use it, and what to consider before sharing it with clients.

Two Active Chairs

Each episode remains limited to two active positions. If more parts emerge, the practitioner can end the episode or start another rather than expanding the tool into a multi-part map.

Label History

If a chair label changes, the review should preserve that history so later comparison is descriptive and grounded.

Can I begin before the two sides are named?

Yes. Role labels can remain unnamed until the client's terms become clearer.

What if one side is underdeveloped?

An underdeveloped side is a supported partial state and should not be forced into completion.

Does the tool recommend integration steps?

No. It records any integration, softening, negotiation, or next step that emerges, but it does not generate recommendations.
