Genogram Distant Relationship Symbol
The distant relationship symbol is shown as a single dotted red line between two people in EasyGenogram. Use it when the relationship is weak, emotionally remote, or low-contact without being fully severed. This guide explains when distance is the right label and when cutoff, conflict, or distant-hostile is more accurate.

Distant Relationship Example in a Genogram
Grace Whitfield and her brother, Peter Whitfield, talk maybe once a year.
No conflict between them, and they didn’t fall out either, they've just drifted.
The distant line connects them directly.
Distant vs. Cutoff vs. Conflict
- Distant/Poor: single dotted line. Weak connection, not dislike, some interaction still happens.
- Conflict: double dotted red lines. Active tension, still interacting, but charged.

- Cutoff: dashed line with two vertical bars. No contact at all.

Distant sits in the middle: less than the tension of conflict, but more connection than a full cutoff.
Getting the degree right matters, marking a faded relationship as a cutoff overstates how final it is, and marking a genuine cutoff as distant understates it.
Distant-Hostile
Some relationships combine both patterns; little contact overall, but tension whenever contact does happen.
EasyGenogram has a built-in Distant-Hostile line for this, a gray dashed line combined with a red zigzag.

Use it when the low-contact pattern of Distant isn't the full picture, and the occasional interaction is genuinely charged rather than neutral.
How to Add It in EasyGenogram
Select the relationship line between the two people and choose Distant/Poor from the emotional line set.

FAQ
What does a distant relationship line look like on a genogram?
A single dotted red line between two people. It represents a weak emotional connection and infrequent contact, without the active tension of conflict or the total absence of cutoff.
What's the difference between distant and cutoff relationships?
Distant means contact is limited or weak but still happens sometimes. Cutoff means there's no contact at all.
What's the difference between distant and conflict relationships?
Distant reflects low connection without necessarily any dislike. Conflict reflects active tension, the people are still engaging, but the interactions are charged.
What is a distant-hostile relationship?
A combined pattern where overall contact is limited, but the contact that does happen is tense or hostile. EasyGenogram shows this with a gray dashed line combined with a red zigzag.
Can a distant relationship change over time?
Yes. If contact increases and the relationship warms, update the line to Close. If contact stops entirely, update it to Cutoff instead.
