Visual Command Cards

Visual Command Cards is a ready-to-complete-together parent-training tool for practitioners working with parents of children with autism spectrum or language-delay needs. It helps practitioners and parents select real caregiver commands, attach accessible visual cues, and record whether the cues appear useful during child response observations.

Learn more about this tool

Use this background section to understand when the tool fits, how practitioners use it, and what to consider before sharing it with clients.

When It Is Used

Use it for selected recurring situations where a child may need a visual cue paired with a spoken caregiver direction.

What It Captures

The card set captures command, situation, visual cue, use notes, optional response notes, card status, and cue history when cues change.

Important Limitations

The tool does not diagnose language needs, create a broad communication system, select commands automatically, or make developmental interpretations.

Can a card exist without a command?

No. A cue without a command is invalid because the tool is built around command-cue pairing.

Are response notes required?

No. Response notes are optional when tracking is enabled; a card can remain usable while review is incomplete.

Does the tool choose the best visual cue?

No. The practitioner or parent supplies or selects the cue, and the system records the pairing and observations.
