Scatterplot for Temporal Behavior Patterns

Scatterplot is a temporal behavior-pattern tool for practitioners using FBA or behavior support planning. It helps practitioners define a target behavior, map occurrences into time blocks, activities, or routines, and review a heatmap showing higher- and lower-occurrence periods.

When It Is Used

Use this tool when the key question is when a target behavior is more or less likely across time, activity, or routine.

What It Shows

The heatmap shows cell totals or intensity, observation coverage, and descriptive clusters based on recorded data.

Limits

The tool does not collect ABC sequences, confirm function, recommend intervention, or treat blank and unobserved cells as the same when coverage information is available.

Is this the same as ABC recording?

No. Scatterplot focuses on temporal patterns, not full antecedent-behavior-consequence chains.

Can observers mark occurrences?

Yes. Observers can mark occurrences or counts in configured time, activity, or routine cells.

Does a blank cell mean no behavior occurred?

Not always. Blank cells should distinguish no occurrence from no observation when that information is available.

Does the heatmap explain the cause of behavior?

No. It shows temporal clustering descriptively and leaves interpretation to the practitioner.
