Response Prevention Plan

The Response Prevention Plan is an OCD ERP planning tool for practitioners and clients. It helps specify which compulsions, avoidance patterns, reassurance seeking, or safety behaviors will be blocked during and after exposure, and which non-compulsive responses or delay rules are allowed instead.

When It Is Used

Use it while setting up ERP assignments or exposure categories where rituals, avoidance, reassurance, or safety behaviors must be blocked.

What It Captures

The plan captures exposure context, prohibited behaviors, allowed alternatives or delay rules, timing, and adherence review points.

Important Limits

The tool is not an exposure hierarchy, symptom tracker, or clinical outcome measure. It does not decide whether a behavior is clinically appropriate.

Can a plan be valid without an allowed alternative response?

Yes. A plan can be valid when refraining itself is the agreed behavior, as long as the plan explicitly indicates that no alternative is specified.

Does the system judge whether an allowed response is reassurance?

No. The practitioner reviews and revises allowed responses; the system does not infer clinical appropriateness.

Can rules apply after exposure as well as during exposure?

Yes. The plan can clarify rules for during exposure, after exposure, or phase-specific use.

What happens if a new covert ritual is identified later?

The practitioner can add rules while preserving prior plan context for review.
