My Three Houses child-perspective tool for safety casework

My Three Houses is a child-centered Signs of Safety perspective-gathering tool for child safety practitioners. It helps practitioners capture what a child says or shows about what is worrying, what is going well or feels safe, and what they want to be different so the child’s perspective can inform assessment and planning.

Use this background section to understand when the tool fits, how practitioners use it, and what to consider before sharing it with clients.

Practitioner-Facilitated Use

The child experience is facilitated by the practitioner by default. The child is not expected to complete a stand-alone self-service workflow.

What It Captures

The tool captures the child’s worries, what is going well or feels safe or comforting, and hopes or wanted differences, using words, representations, or labeled summaries.

Non-Interpretive Record

The tool preserves what was shared and how it was recorded, but does not interpret drawings, score statements, or judge credibility.

Is My Three Houses a clinical interpretation tool?

No. It captures the child’s perspective in a structured format but does not interpret drawings or statements clinically.

Does the child have to complete every house?

No. Partial perspective should be preserved without forcing completion of all three areas.

Can practitioners summarize what the child said?

Yes. Practitioner summaries can be recorded, but they must be labeled separately from the child’s own words or representations.

Can the record connect to wider safety planning?

Yes. The practitioner can link the child’s perspective to wider assessment or planning notes where appropriate.
