Hypothesis Testing / Revision Record

Hypothesis Testing / Revision Record is a practitioner-only longitudinal formulation history tool for systemic family practitioners. It helps practitioners record earlier hypotheses, new family interaction information, revision decisions, and the current formulation so inquiry stays responsive rather than fixed.

Tool guide

Learn more about this tool

Use this background section to understand when the tool fits, how practitioners use it, and what to consider before sharing it with clients.

When it is used

Use it after or during sessions when new family interaction information changes, challenges, or elaborates a working systemic hypothesis.

History and comparison

Earlier hypotheses remain visible for comparison, including hypotheses that were revised, set aside, alternative, or unresolved. The current formulation stays prominent.

Limits

The tool does not prove hypotheses, assign causal certainty, create scores, or generate diagnostic conclusions.

Does the system decide whether a hypothesis is true?

No. The practitioner records how session information affected the hypothesis; the system organizes chronology, comparison, and descriptive status only.

Can discarded hypotheses stay visible?

Yes. A set-aside hypothesis remains in history but should not appear as the current formulation.

Do family members complete this record?

No. This is a practitioner-only revision record; family interaction or responses may be summarized by the practitioner as session information.
