Boundary Map for Structural Family Therapy

Boundary Map is a practitioner-only structural family therapy tool. Practitioners use it to identify relational boundary patterns, record whether those patterns are functional, unhealthy, or problem-maintaining, and compare boundary profiles across snapshots.

Use this background section to understand when the tool fits, how practitioners use it, and what to consider before sharing it with clients.

When It Is Used

Use Boundary Map when the practitioner needs a focused profile of boundaries related to a presenting concern and wants a before/after view of later boundary-pattern changes.

Practitioner Role

The practitioner enters boundary observations and any functional or unhealthy distinctions. The system organizes, filters, and compares those entries without deciding boundary health.

Relevant Limitations

Unassessed relationships are labeled not assessed, not healthy. The tool does not score severity, prescribe restructuring steps, or infer clinical success.

Does Boundary Map decide whether a boundary is unhealthy?

No. The practitioner enters any functional, unhealthy, or problem-maintaining distinction; the system only displays and compares the entered information.

Can I leave a boundary pattern unresolved?

Yes. The tool should allow unresolved or needs-observation states when the practitioner has not yet determined the boundary pattern.

Is Boundary Map client-facing?

No. Boundary Map is a practitioner-only formulation and review aid.

What happens to demo boundary data when I save?

Demo boundary data is not saved as real client data by default. Saving preserves the tool itself and intentional reusable configuration.
